Investec Derby at Epsom Downs Racecourse
The Investec Derby held at Epsom Downs Racecourse can be traced back to its origins in 1780 and has played a significant role in English racing and social history ever since.
The Group 1 race is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies and is run at Epsom Downs over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 metres).
The Investec Derby takes place on the first Saturday in June each year with both the course and the spectators creating a truly unique setting. The Epsom Derby has long been known for its unique party atmosphere and for the full range of social classes on view ranging from the Queen to household celebrities.
For thoroughbreds, the course is full of with twists, turns, rises and falls throughout the mile and a half contest, creating the ultimate physical and mental test for both race horses and jockey’s.
At the Investec Derby 2010, Workforce and jockey Ryan Moore were able to overcome such strenuous obstacles by powering seven lengths clear of the field at the line and winning the race in sensational style. This magnificent victory achieved the biggest winning race margin since Shergar’s record-breaking 10 lengths in 1981, whilst beating the track record of 2m32.31s set by Lammtarra in 1995 by almost a second with a time of 2m32.31s.
The 2012 Investec Epsom Derby promises to be even more spectacular and is definitely the stand out event in the British Social Calendar and must not be missed.

2012: Channel 4 to host Grand National, Investec Derby Festival and Royal Ascot
Yesterday (Monday 19 March 2012) it was announced that Channel 4 are set to broadcast all terrestrial racing including the Grand National, Investec Derby Festival and Royal Ascot in a new four-year deal (from 2013). In managing to secure this broadcast, Channel 4 will ascertain rights and become the exclusive broadcaster of British racing on terrestrial television. Previously the BBC has displayed coverage which had lasted for over 50 years, however after trying to house as “competitive a bid as possible” the British Broadcasting Corporation lost the chance to maintain the rights.
