Henley Royal Regatta

In 1839 the very first Henley Regatta was originally staged in a single afternoon by the Mayor and was renowned for being a popular public attraction which included a fair and other attraction. Since then, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became the focal point of the event.

Unlike other multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. The Course length at Henley is 1 mile 550 yards, 112 metres longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 metres; enabling the organisation to run up to 90 races on some of the five days, with races starting at 5-minute intervals. There is a magnificent array of Challenge
Trophies up for grabs, the most prized being The Grand Challenge Cup for Eights dating back to the very first year of the Regatta.
